A WORLDWIDE VISION: GOING GLOBAL WITH EYE SURGERY

Prof Christopher Liu OBE MD PhD is a renowned senior ophthalmic clinician-scientist based around Brighton. Hailing from Hong Kong, he completed medical school and trained in ophthalmology in London, before completing higher surgical training in Cambridge and Norwich in the 90s. Prof Liu was awarded an OBE in 2018 for services to ophthalmology, is a pioneer of osteo-odonto-keratoprosthetic (OOKP) surgery to treat corneal blindness, and has treated numerous complex cataract cases with great success. He currently divides his time between consultant services in the Scottish Highlands, his private clinic near Brighton, and his hometown Hong Kong - where he was recently appointed lead consultant for Ophthalmology Services in the region.

PRACTICING IN THE US: TIPS & SECRETS FROM AN INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATE

Dr. Ruan grew up in Singapore and earned his MB,BS at UCL Medical School. He originally trained as a general surgeon and performed extensive research in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Harvard Medical School. Dr Ruan subsequently completed his Anesthesiology residency at BIDMC and went on to acquire further fellowship training in Interventional Pain at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Hospital for Special Surgery. He is currently an American Board of Anesthesia-certified specialist practising as an attending Anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain specialist at Providence VA Medical Center, holding the appointment of Clinical Instructor at Brown University.

Dr. Johann Malawana is a renowned leader in healthcare education, technology, and policy, working across government, industry, and international organizations. A trained obstetrician with over a decade in the NHS, he has held key leadership roles in medicine, technology, and healthcare policy. He is the founder of Medics.Academy, a global health technology company, and Managing Director of the Healthcare Leadership Academy, expanding its impact across four continents.

Dr. Malawana has served on multiple high-profile boards, including the General Medical Council, Institute of Leadership, and Resident Doctors Committee (previously the Junior Doctors Committee). As the Chair of the BMA JDC from 2015-2016, he was responsible for the junior doctors campaign and several rounds of negotiations with the government. As a specialist advisor for the UK Department of International Trade, he develops strategic policies and leads international trade missions to advance healthcare education and training worldwide.

3D PRINTING AND AI IN NHS ENGLAND

Dr Lee is an IMT3 at UCLH and an incoming NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Clinical Oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research and Royal Marsden Hospital. His academic research focuses on the use of AI in imaging and predicting cancer treatment outcomes. As an NHS Clinical Entrepreneur, he co-founded M3dicube, an organisation which has taught >700 medical professionals 3D printing and segmentation in medicine. He has previous national leadership experience at NHS England leading digital programmes in AI, clinical decision support, and digital clinical safety. He was awarded as a ‘35 Under 35’ Future Digital Health leader by the Federation of Informatics Professionals, and holds a Master’s with Distinction in Healthcare Technologies from King’s College London, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Digital Health Leadership from Imperial College London.

PATHWAYS IN MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY

Mr Kow graduated from Leeds in 2022 and is currently an Academic Foundation Dentist, balancing both research and clinical work through the Raised in Yorkshire project. He completed his DCT1 in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) in York and is now undertaking DCT2 in Community Dental Services (CDS) and Paediatric Dentistry across Leeds and Harrogate, continuing his involvement in Raised in Yorkshire as a research dentist. In addition to his training, he works as an associate dentist one day a week in Wetherby.

HOW TO BUILD A WINNING DENTAL PORTFOLIO

Dr Chum graduated from Newcastle in 2017 and is now a private dentist working in multiple specialist referral centres, with extensive experience in complex restorative cases, posterior restorative dentistry and clinical photography. He is a full member and the North East Regional Representative of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD). His photography skills also allowed him to be shortlisted for the Prestigious case-based award, Aesthetic Dentistry Award - Composite smile makeover category. In that year he was the youngest finalist for the category.

Dr. Low is a senior registrar in urology and founder of MMI UK, who has won multiple poster presentation prizes and is involved with various urology research projects at hospitals in south London. He obtained his MBBS and iBSc at UCL, where he organised various student events, including the first iteration of the conference you are attending today!

 

Dr. Low will be guiding students of all years on how to build up and maintain a competitive, focused CV that will benefit you when applying to specialty training, in particular core surgical training - which is the starting point of a career in any surgical specialty! If you’re considering a career in surgery, or curious about what it takes to secure a training post, come along!

POINT-OF-CARE ULTRASOUND (POCUS)

 Dr. Leung is an academic FY2 doctor in the Yorkshire & Humber deanery, with strong interest in pre-hospital retrieval & emergency medicine (PHEM) and intensive care. His main research interests are arrhythmias, cardiac electrophysiology, POCUS and trauma management. He has published over 30 peer reviewed articles to date, and has contributed to multiple undergraduate emergency medicine volumes. He holds certifications in Focused Ultrasound in Intensive Care (FUSIC), BASICS Pre Hospital Emergency Care (PHEC) and multiple life support algorithms whilst being trained in critical care transfer.

Dr. Leung will be covering the basics of point-of-care ultrasound, including live demonstrations with ultrasound equipment - which may become a mainstay of pre-hospital trauma protocol in the future!

RESUSCITATION AND AIRWAY MANAGEMENT

Dr. Loh hails from the little island of Penang, Malaysia. His journey in the UK started as a sixth form student in a boarding school, before spending six humbling years at the University of Cambridge, where he discovered his passion for all things physiology. After completing foundation training in North West London, Dr. Loh took up a Junior Clinical Fellow role in Intensive Care. Dr. Loh is currently a Core Anaesthetics trainee based in Surrey. His interests lie in airway management, cardiopulmonary testing and medical education. Outside of medicine, he loves taking photographs and watching classic films.

 

Through this anaesthetic airway workshop, learn the indications for various airway adjuncts and how to use these in resuscitation - a perfect taster for those who are yet to go on to an emergency/anaesthetics placement!

BASIC SUTURING TECHNIQUES

Dr. Chew is an academic FY2 with a keen interest in surgery and medical education. She is based in Stoke and works part-time as an Associate Teaching Fellow for Keele University. She is undertaking a Masters in Clinical Education and is keen on pursuing otolaryngology. 

Join us for an exciting course for basic suturing techniques! Ideal for students in their early medical or dental training, this course is designed to provide teaching and close guidance on developing fundamentals in surgical precision and dexterity. This session will cover basic suturing techniques which will develop your confidence in surgical specialties.

KNOT TYING TECHNIQUES IN SURGERY

Mr. Lawrence Nip graduated from UCL in 2018, and is currently a general surgery registrar in the South Thames deanery. He is also a PhD candidate with the Division of Medicine at UCL investigating novel mesh technologies in the field of abdominal wall reconstruction and complex hernia repair, for which he has been awarded funding from key industry stakeholders. Mr. Nip has been affiliated with HKMSUK since 2020 where he established the popular "Study with HKMSUK" teaching sessions, which has grown to become a highly regarded resource for medical students.

Mr. Nip is bringing his extensive experience in surgery and knot-tying to our conference, where he will explain different techniques and their uses in  ligating vessels and suturing.
